Pedagogical arrangements

Our pedagogical approach KOTA includes various pedagogical methods, such as tutorials, lectures, visiting lecturers, visits to destinations and/or to tourism organizations, practical projects and learning assignments (e.g. a blog) and /or an exam. The specified timetable of the learning process of approximately eight weeks is planned together with the working life and given at the beginning of the study unit. Tutoring and multi- stakeholder assessment of the learning process take place throughout the study unit according to the assessment criteria. This study unit part is implemented partly together with the IBS Programme.

 

Depending on the cooperation partners the development task and/or problem may vary on yearly basis.

Content
  • understanding tourism in the Arctic context from the view point of geography, indigenous cultures, image, target groups etc.
  • tourism destination as a concept
  • the role of DMO and other regional tourism organisations
  • regional tourism strategies
  • arctic destinations and operating environments
  • potential and challenges of sustainable arctic tourism from the socio-cultural and environmental perspective
  • multidisciplinary and cross-border thinking in the arctic context
  • safety issues as part of sustainable and responsible tourism business in the arctic
Assessment

Excellent skills

The student knows really well the Arctic operating environment and applies multidisciplinary and cross-border thinking in his/her own actions. The student understands tourism as a global phenomenon and its impacts in regional and local contexts. The student is able to understand the importance of safety issues and can apply them in the tourism and hospitality related operations. All the assignments are performed according to the instructions.

 

Good skills

The student is familiar with the Arctic operating environment and can adopt multidisciplinary and cross-border thinking in his/her own actions. The student understands tourism as a global phenomenon and knows its impacts in regional and local contexts. The student knows how to take safety issues into consideration in the tourism and hospitality business. All the assignments are performed mostly according to the instructions.

 

Satisfactory skills

The student knows basic facts about the Arctic operating environment and is capable of cross-border and multidisciplinary thinking through examples. The student has some understanding of tourism as a global phenomenon but cannot see its impacts in regional and local contexts very clearly. He/she understands the importance of safety issues in the tourism and hospitality business.  All the assignments are performed mostly according to the instructions.

 

Fail

The student does not complete the assignments according to instructions or does not attend the learning situations at all. He/she does not pass the assignments and/or the exam as required.
