Speech Communication and Academic Writing 3 ECTS

Competence Goals:

The student becomes familiar with the central theories and concepts of oral communication. S/he learns to perceive and interpret his/her perceptions in different communication situations. The student knows how to receive and give feedback. S/he recognizes him/herself as a communicator: a speaker and a writer. The student is able to express and analyze his/her own thoughts in writing. S/he knows how to assess and work on his/her own text. S/he is able to prepare a written presentation in a matter-of-fact style, correct both in language and in style and is familiar with the special requirements of writing scientific papers and theses.


Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

During the lessons the students practise in expressing and analysing their own thoughts in speaking and writing.In speech communication, oral communication skills are developed in interaction with clients and colleagues and in multidisciplinary/professional team.

Moreover, special emphasis is paid toelaborating the texts in accordance with the thesis instructions of the Lapland UAS so that the students are able to prepare a written (research) essay correct both in language and in style.  Most of the writing assignments are implemented in the computer classroom individually, and in pairs

The seminar will be held October 24, 2016 at 12:30-15:45.


Announced at the beginning of the term.


The written assignment as well as its oral presentation alongside with continuous active participation in the contact lessons will be taken into account for  the final course credit mark.


The grading scale used is from (fail=) 0 -- to(excellent=)5.
