The objective of this module is to sensitise students to cross-cultural differences and similarities in the international business environment and to encourage them to adapt themselves accordingly, and to help them understand and appreciate issues involved in cross-cultural interaction. To enable students to design human resource plans for business in international contexts. To prepare students to address diverse cultural audiences and discuss fundamental presentation concepts in inter-cultural encounters, such as audience sensitivity, code switching, and proxemics.​To introduce students to career development and career adaptability as a part of Human Resource Development in general and  more specific managing the People- Factor (Personnel) in CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). To help students develop an understanding of how companies are organised and managed by discussing culture’s role in organisational development. To provide the students with knowledge of cross-cultural entrepreneurship in the arctic context based on insights from international entrepreneurship and small business internationalisation theory. 

Participation fee is180 euros / Osallistumismaksu on180 euroa.

Major principles of Non-Profit-Management:

This part of the course is designed to introduce students into the field of managing Non-Profit Organisations (NPO). This field is part of the Tertiary sector, the so called Third Sector of social services. The students should get an idea about the key factors for a sustainable economy and the specific Non- Profit-Management regarding formal goals and substantial or factual targets to motivate the social oriented and often volunteering staff. The rules and necessity of the Social Capital in an economy. Standard managerial tools plus an understanding for the social workers and their needs / vision and a sensitisation for them to develop their position for future needs will be communicated and discussed in the course (e.g. CSR). Complex welfare companies who deal with senior, youth and health care plus disabled people at the same time request a differentiated Holistic Management System which addresses the administrative and social staff at the same time.

Some of the literature will be provided during lecture sessions but students can always refer to the following authors for in depth knowledge: Geerd Hofstede, Edward Hall, Susan c. Schneider & Jean-Louis Barsoux, Jean-Claude Usunier, & Julie Anne Lee, M.V. Lustig, Ray French, Marie-Joelle Browaeys & Roger Price and J. Koster among others.

Sisältö

The module contents are lectures, group discussion, group presentations, articles/case studies to be read and written assignments to be discussed during lecture sessions. Students will familiarise themselves with the concept of culture and how cultural peculiarities can be described. Students will learn how to deal with managerial challenges when operating in international markets in terms of human resource management. Students will learn to put communication theories into practice and conduct successful business interactions, including writing the documentation for them along with preparation of original, professional presentations. The students will deal with organizational cultures and explore in detail their managerial implications. Students will recognise the relevance of new and small firms crossing national borders using entrepreneurial and innovative resources.A group project work will be done through case studies to be reported orally and in writing. There will be 95 contact lesson hours and 175 hours are prescribed for self-study sessions. Therefore, home assignments are included in the modules.

Arviointi

The grading scale for the module is 0-5 and the assessment of students will be made on the basis of the following:

  • mandatory attendance along with active and competent participation during in class activities (50%)
  • completion of all out-of-class assignments by the due dates (50%)

Upon failure to comply with the above requirements students will be unsuccessful in completing the module. Students are always encouraged to clear doubts and concerns regarding the course with the instructors.
