Content

Learning goals

Student is able to define current and future trends of Arctic Business and innovation potential. He/she is able to identify the Arctic from the geographic, geopolitical and socio-economic prospective. Students understand the challenges and opportunities of the region from the point of view of the cross-cultural and cross-border cooperation. Study on indigenous cultures is a part of the course. Students gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of entrepreneurship and innovations. Students improve their problem solving and project management skills through real life project cases. In addition to theoretical knowledge, which students will gain during the course, students will get valuable hands-on experience in developing an innovative Arctic business and/or Arctic product/service with step-by-step guidance by coaches and supervision of Arctic business commissioners.

Schedule of the Summer School:

Week 1 and 2, 6.8.-17.8.2018 studies in CAMPUS in Rovaniemi in Finland. Face-to-face lectures and fieldwork activities. Two days field trip in Finnish Lapland.

Week 3, 20.8.-24.8.2018 ONLINE instructions and project activities (performed on distance on-line)

Week 4, 27.8-31.8.2018 INDEPENDENT teamwork and final course assignment (performed on distance on-line)

Course content:

I Building a background on Arctic Business and Innovations

Interactive learning on the following topics :

  • Arctic today: global trends and development in the Arctic (economics, environment, climate change, international business, politics)

  • Cross-Cultural dimensions, including indigenous livelihoods

  • Entrepreneurship and Innovations, Sources of innovation in the Arctic

  • Case studies, including tourism, forestry and nature, ICT, various local industries

  • Arctic Futures workshop

  • Building Arctic Network Seminar - an interactive side event that gathers together Arctic experts from different fields and is a platform for knowledge exchange, discussions and networking

II Field visits and study tour in Finnish Lapland

Two days study tour across the Finnish Lapland with the overnight in the Arctic wilderness. Various visits to local industries, reindeer farm, nature parks and other tourism sites aiming at deepening Arctic knowledge and understanding.

III Business innovation project

Based on the multidisciplinary Arctic background built in previous sessions, students carry out a real life based Arctic innovation project through the set of team workshops and guided step-by-step approach based on so called Creative Steps 2.0 methodology. Students have an opportunity to develop and test their own business idea linked to the Arctic development or work on a business case provided by actual Arctic company

NOTE: students of Lapland and Kajaani UAS should cover 150 EUR study trip participation fee that includes 2 day trip to the north of Lapland (bus transportation costs and accommodation).
