Objectives

Objective
The student knows common quality management systems and their impact on business strategy. The student understands the role of quality management as an integrated part of business management. The student is able to assess business processes using quality management criteria.

Pedagogical arrangements

The student learns the fundamental concepts and principals of Total Quality Management (TQM) which is one of the most important organizational innovations in the 20th century.  S/he also understands how TQM s applied in different quality management systems which are used by SME companies. The student applies his/her knowledge in the Quality Self-Assessment assignment based on either Malcolm Baldrige Business Excellence Model  (MB Model) or EFQM (European Foundation for Quality Management) Model.

Content

Core contents:

  • The Quality Gurus and the Development of Quality Concept in general and also the Service Quality Concept
  • Different Quality Management Systems; ISO-system and Malcolm Baldrige Business Excellence Model (MB Model) and EFQM, Balanced Score Card etc.
  • Insight to the Quality Categories of MB Model and EFQM  which are Leadership, Strategic planning, Customer and Market Focus, Personnel Development, Knowledge Managment Process Managment, Results and Social Responisibity and Environmental Managment
  • Quality Self-Assessment Prosess of Quality Managment according to MB Model or EFQM Model
  • Development of Quality in an SME company
  • International  article based case studies
Assessment

Assessment criteria: Failed (0) - Satisfactory (1,2) - Good (3,4) and Excellent (5)

The total assessment is devided the following way:

1.       Active participation  20%

2.       Article preparations and presentations 30 %

3.       Quality Self-Assessment Assignment 50 %

 The student has to evalute one´s own learning by self-evaluation. In addition s/he has to evalute group members if s/he has done group work during the course. The third evaluation is the official course feedback which in done in Optima. The final grade in winha requires that all the assignments and exams have been approved and the evaluations have been completed.
