Objectives

Learning outcomes and competencies

The student widens his/her English language skills by familiarizing himself/herself with the communication situations in the field of information technology. The student develops his/her oral and written communication skills and cultural awareness. He/she is able to communicate in demanding communication situations taking the context, style and register into account. He/she can manage in English in telephoning, writing business emails and in socializing with clients. The student is able to plan and give a company presentation and describe a system, device or a process in information technology.
 
The student is able to use meeting and negotiations terminology in English, take part in meetings, negotiations and discussions dealing with topics in information technology. The student knows the purchasing process in a technology company including the oral and written business communication connected with it. He/she is able to write business and meeting documents such as a business letter and minutes of a meeting. The student develops his/her discussion and listening skills to be able to take part in discussions and to understand and summarize presentations about information technology topics.
 
Proficiency level B2 or above in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Objectives

The course aims at improving the students’ professional communication skills in English.
The students develop their speaking, writing, reading and listening skills in various working life communication situations.
Proficiency level B2 or above in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
 
Content
 
The course is taught in two parts, each comprising 3 credit units.
 
Part 1 in sprint term 2009
          Client contacts and social situations at work
          Telephone and email communication in working life
           Professional presentation skills
           Charts and graphs as part of a presentation
           Process and system descriptions
          Terminology and topics in information technology
           Professional listening, speaking and reading tasks dealing with topics of IT
           Spoken and written assignments
 
 
Part 2 in autumn term 2009
         Business communication in industry both orally and in writing
·         Business and trade terminology
·         Company presentations
·         Purchasing process
·         Meetings and negotiations and their terminology
·         Terminology and topics in information technology
         Professional listening, speaking and reading tasks dealing with topics of IT

Assessment

Assessment methods:

          Regular and active participation in class - the attendance requirement is 80%.
          Spoken and written assignments according to the schedule
          The assessment is based on demonstrating your skills in class and in exams as well as through your spoken and written
           assignments
          Written examination and listening comprehension examination
            Oral tests
          Assessment scale: Fail – Excellent 5
