Learning outcome and competencies (English for Nurses and Public Health Nurses)
The student practices communication in English in professional situations in the context of nursing and health care. The student gets working tools to foster his/her use of the English language as a natural part of his/her professional competence as a nurse or a public health nurse. The student is able to develop his/her language skills further and to retrieve information from sources written in English. He/she studies scientific articles and texts in reference to nursing, public health nursing and nursing sciences.
The student uses, practices and reviews essential professional terminology in English. He / she understands the fundamentals of intercultural communication, transcultural nursing and the challenges of multicultural society. He/she obtains working tools to work in an international / multicultural setting.
Course contents (3 op)
· Written and oral assignments and practice in reference to client interaction and services in nursing work, interaction with international and multicultural clientele.
· Texts and terminology in the context of health care system in Finland, health promotion, anatomy, mental health, nursing interventions, guiding and counselling.
· International awareness and transcultural nursing.
100 % attendance in contact lessons.
Assessment is based on : Active participation in contact lessons, successful completion of all written and oral assignments, self assessment and feedback.
