Learning outcome:

After the course students are able to explain basic theoretical concepts of intercultural communication and identify qualities needed for effective cross-cultural management. Students develop their ability of cultural sensitivity and tolerance and are able to apply it when working in multicultural groups. Students are able in particular to describe cultural characteristics represented in Northern areas and the Barents region countries and are able to take cultural uniqueness and versatility into account, including indigenous peoples and their cultures, when operating in the northern environments. Students are able to apply cross-cultural management skills in various business situations: they know how to prepare, perform and communicate when doing the business with the business representatives of different cultures.

Tolerance towards different cultures; cultural sensitivity and the collision of cultures
Introduction to the cultures represented in the study group
Diversity of cultures in the North, including indigenous groups
Multicultural issues in the northern environment and their affects on business culture
How to utilise cultural competence in the northern business environment
Case studies: doing business with Russian, Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian counterparts and indigenous groups in the Barents region
  • PBL-tutorials, including the written information retrieval assignments (essays) for the tutorials 30 %
  • Culture presentation of students' own culture (team work) 20 %
  • "Culture Consultants" -team work for the BART-project 30 %
  • Individual written assignment: "My cultural framework" 20 %
  • active participation in all learning situations and study trip(s)
