Objectives

Learning outcome:

Students have basic readiness to plan, price and analyse quality products and services in the field of tourism and hospitality management based on local resources. Students have an overall picture of various R&D processes and the quality requirements of various services and products.

 

 
Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

The study unit is linked closely with an other study unit " Financial Management in Tourism", especially concerning the pricing of tourism products and services.

In addition the study unit is partly realized together with Univeristy of Lapland study unit " YMAT1114 Onnistuva matkailutuote".

 
The study unit is partly organised with a tourism company/companies and entrepreneur(s) to whom students develop  product(s) in practise. Also other experts from tourism industry are performing as visitor lecturers. In spring 2012 the commissioner is Matkalla Sallaan Association and its member companies. The product development task is to develop summer tourism product for Salla Destinaton

- Other learning material will be announced at the beginning of the study unit.
 
Content

New holistic approach to tourism product development and co-creation is introduced and applied in the following topics:  

  • Operating environment, tourism product and customership
  • Product development process(es)
  • Developing and co-creating different types of tourism products
  • Pricing  tourism products
  • Utilisation  of locality and local resources
  • Practical applications and case studies from Finland and abroad

Grading scale:
 
Excellent (5)
- Student has an excellent command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it fully in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures actively and shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in all his/her activities. All the assignments are performed according to instructions.
 
Good (3-4)
- Student has a good command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it mostly in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures quite actively and shows somewhat analytical, reflective and critical approach in most of his/her activities. All the assignments are performed mostly according to instructions.
Satisfactory (1-2)
- Student has a satisfactory command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it only partly or not at all in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures seldom and shows very little or no analytical, reflective and critical approach in of his/her activities. The assignments are not fully performed according to instructions.
