Objectives

Learning outcome:

Students are familiar with the tasks of a superior in different operating environments of the service sector and know how to take care of tasks belonging to supervisors in their field.

 

 
Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

Pedagogical arrangements: Lectures by teachers and visitors from various sizes and fields of Tourism Businesses. Independent and group studies: articles, research and theories are reflected into principles in practice and best practices i.e. by using cases and an Enterprise Resource Planning solution Travius. Group/pair assignments and tutorials, Case studies and visit to a Tourism company.

Content

The aim of the course is to introduce to basics of Daily Operational Management as it applies to a variety of Tourism Business companies. Students will learn the perspective of operational management contribution to the organisation´s long-term objectives and success. Students will learn how operational decisions are made and variety of practical techniques applied in operational management. The focus will be given to the specifics of operational management in tourism sector by providing practical insight with the help of various case studies and an ICT tool (Travius). 

Assessment

To have this course accepted, the Student must pass the Travius assignment; the Student must also pass all the other given assignments and exam determined according to schdule and take part in contact teaching. The presence in contact teaching determinates partly the total assessment. 

To pass this course: You need to show active participation at the classes (discussions, agreements, disagreements). Participation at least 80 % in contact teaching. You need to do all required assignments according to the given instructions. All the required parts of the course have to be accomplished before the course can be evaluated.  

Evaluation: Group exam 50 %, Group assignment 50 % and Travius-assignment passed/failed.

Self- and peer evaluation is compulsory. The final assessment of this cource requires the student to give course feedback in link: http://opintopalaute.ramk.fi/Opintojaksopalaute/  
Feedback content does not affect in the numerical assessment.

Grading scale: Excellent (5) - ….- Failed (0).

Excellent (5): Student has an excellent command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it fully in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures actively and shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in all his/her activities. All the assignments are performed according to instructions.

Good (3-4): Student has a good command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it mostly in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures quite actively and shows somewhat analytical, reflective and critical approach in most of his/her activities. All the assignments are performed mostly according to instructions.

Satisfactory (1-2): Student has a satisfactory command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it only partly or not at all in practical learning excercises. Student participates lectures seldom and shows very little or no analytical, reflective and critical approach in of his/her activities. The assignments are not fully performed according to instructions.

Failed (0): Student has not participated the compulsory lectures and/or workshops and closing seminar and has failed to perform one or more assignments according to instructions.
