Objectives

Learning outcome:

Students are familiar with the phenomenon of arctic tourism in different arctic areas of the world and the impacts of arctic tourism and how it is developed in a sustainable way. They are also familiar with different arctic tourism destinations.

 

 
Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

Study unit is organised as cross-selective studies in MTI.

There will be organised lectures/eLectures with local and international visiting lecturers. In addition a field trip is organised to Swedish Lapland in order to be able to familiarise into Arctic tourism in practise. Students will complete different learning assignments and an exam.

  • the arctic concept: the arctic area, geography, arctic indigenous peoples, images of "arctic" in tourism marketing
  • tourism from the arctic aspect
  • arctic tourist destinations
  • arctic attractions and the arctic tourism product
  • future trends and threats in arctic tourism
  • sustainability issues in the arctic areas; impact of tourism in the arctic area
  • arctic co-operation
Assessment

Principal of Assessment:

  • Compulsory participation in the field trip
  • Learning exercises and exam
Assessment criteria:
Excellent (5)
- Student has an excellent command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it fully in practical learning excercises. Student participatescontact lessons actively and shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in all his/her activities. All the assignments are performed according to instructions.
Good (3-4)
- Student has a good command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it mostly in practical learning excercises. Student participates contact lessons quite actively and shows somewhat analytical, reflective and critical approach in most of his/her activities. All the assignments are performed mostly according to instructions.
Satisfactory (1-2)
-Student has a satisfactory command of theoretical knowledge and is able to apply it only partly or not at all in practical learning excercises. Student participates contact lessons seldom and shows very little or no analytical, reflective and critical approach in his/her activities. The assignments are not fully performed according to instructions.
