This study unit part is implemented in close cooperation with one or more Higher Education Institutes (HEI´s) from the Barents Region or a Nordic country. The study unit includes an intensive course to a pre-determined tourismdestination within the Barents Region or a Nordic country.

There will be pre-, on-site and post- assignments: before, during and after the intesive course.The intensive course will take place in late September in Satakunta Province, which includes participation to an international conference and destination development activity in an Unesco Heritage Site in Rauma. There will be a co-financing fee for students: 100 euros/student.

Material is introduced in the beginning of the study unit.

Content

The student participates in a group project related to a destination management development task within the Barents Region or a Nordic country. The study unit is project-based, multicultural and international in nature. Participation requires pre-studies and/or previous knowledge on destination management related issues (e.g. Developing Destination Experiences study unit part).

Student

  • familiarizes him/herself withthe regional tourism destination in which the intensive course is organised

  • identifies existing challenges and opportunities associated with the development of tourism in the particular regional tourism destination

  • identifies and evaluates the critical success factorsfor cooperation within various thematic themes e.g. product development

  • has an understanding of the destination visitor experience and its relationship to destination branding initiatives

  • develops a thematic task in close collaboration with entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in the regional destination in question

Contents

  • socio-cultural, ecological, political, institutional and economic characteristics ofthe regional tourism destination in question

  • critical success factors of tourism in the particular regional tourismdestination

  • challenges and opportunities of developing tourism in particular regional tourism

Assessment

Excellent skills

The student has profound knowledge of theregional tourism destination in question.  The student knows how to take into consideration all the relevant issues when developing a destination and destination experiences. The student participates in the study trip, performs actively and is able to apply project management and team working skills in action.  He/she shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in all his/her project and team work related activities. All the assignments are performed according to the instructions.

Good skills

The student has good knowledge of the regional tourism destination in question. The student knows mostly how to take into consideration all the relevant issues when developing a destination and destination experiences. The student participates in the study trip, performs quite actively and is able to apply project management and team working skills in action.  He/she shows analytical, reflective and critical approach in most his/her project and team work related activities. All the assignments are mostly performed according to the instructions.

Satisfactory skills

The student has basic knowledge of the regional tourism destination in question . The student vague understanding how to take into consideration all the relevant issues when developing a destination and destination experiences. The student participates in the study trip, however performs quite passively and does not have the ability to apply project management and team working skills in action. All the assignments are mostly performed according to the instructions.

Fail

The student does not complete the assignments according to instructions or does not attend the study trip or other required learning situations at all. He/she does not pass the assignments and/or the exam as required.
