Students learn basic concepts of data communication and networks; topologies, protocols, cabling, devices and components, and network services. The students learn how to install, configure and operate a Server Operating System. Topics are: operating system selection, server roles, installation, updating, troubleshooting, hardware and application management, services configuration, storage and file system management, networking, system maintenance.

Pedagogical arrangements

Pedagogical practices in the course include student ownership and active participation (80% attendance required), activities of searching, sharing and ellaborating knowledge,
conducting tasks and critical reflection on one's own activity. The teacher role in the course is delivering knowledge as well as organizing, assessing and guiding students.The model of instructional design is implemented for systematically determined course contents and delivery methods that follows a logical sequence. Learners activities are predefined and a uniform sequence of instrcution is practiced. However, socio-cultural paradigm is focused by utilizing the model of collaborative learning in performing practical tasks and assignments.


All learning materials and relevant literatures are available in the moodle learning environment for the course.

  5. The concept of routing and congestions
  6. Introdcution to client-server architecture
  7. Installing, configuring and operating a server operating system (Windows Server 2008)
  8. Server Operating System selection process
  9. Basics of Windows Server 2008 (Server Roles, Configuration and  Maintenance, Network Settings)
  10. Basics of Active Directory Services (Domain, User, Groups and resource managment, Organization Units, Group Scope and type, Task Scheduler, Backup and File Management)

The formative assessment model is applied in this course that is students are monitored during the learning process to make sure they are not struggling with the teaching methods and settings used.

    Assignments and Active Participation (60%)
    Exam (40%)

Students are required to pass both parts separately in order to pass this course.
