The objective of the course is to familiarize students with the basics of research work, different types of research methods and techniques, such as constructive method, case study and survey,questionnaires and interviews. The course will illustrate the differences between different methods and will show the students the main stages of research process. Another objective of the course is to improve the participating students’ ability to read for comprehension publications written in their field of specialization, such as articles from professional journals and magazines, and research reports. The participating students will be given opportunities to improve their skills needed to compile professional papers with the primary aim to coach them to prepare and write their Bachelor’s Thesis.


Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

This course includes two parts: Scientific writing and Research work. The whole course is assessed by combining the grades from these two parts, which contribute equally to the final course grade. Teaching method is lecturing coupled with discussions, group and individal work.


The course has a Moodle environment where all course materials are included. Additionally, the learning material, recommended literature and some of the articles for reading will be provided by the instructors during the sessions. The details will be provided in the class and the implementation plan.


The "Scientific writing" part covers the following: 

- Critical Reading, Writing, Spoken Production, Spoken Interaction, and Listening during classes. The students will have opportunities to read scientific articles and research reports and report on them in writing. The articles and reports will also form the basis for discussions in class. The focus is on learning to read critically large amounts of written material for comprehension.

- Writing a Research Proposal.The students will learn to write a research proposal, in addition to documentation styles used in scientific texts, including the Bachelor's Thesis work. For the completion of their research proposal, the students will conduct a research into a subject relevant to their field of studies and write a research proposal on the basis of the instructions given during the class sessions. The proposal is submitted by the due date agreed upon. The proposal will be presented orally for assessment to complete the course.

The "Research work" part covers the following topics:

- Introduction to research work (research topic and questions, individual vs. group research, dimensions of research, types of research approaches and techniques).

- Research techniques (data and information sources, analysis of documents, interviews, observations, questionnaires).

- Research methods (constructive method, survey, case study, experiment, action research, selecting a research method).

- Collecting and analyzing data.

- Managing a research project.  

- Introduction to the philosophy of science.


The "Scientific writing" part is assessed as follows: 1) active and informed participation during class sessions - 30 %; 2) successful completion of assignments by the due dates - 30 %; 3) successful completion of the research proposal (assessed by both teachers) - 40 %. The assignments not returned or completed during the course and the assignments receiving the grade "F" need to be rewritten as assigned by the teachers.

The "Research work" part is assessed as follows: research proposal, based on Thesis Research Proposal Handbook  - 100 %. Research proposals should also be presented in the class at the end of the course.
