Objectives

The students are familiar with the objectives and principles of nursing research and project work as well as the research object of their field. They master the basic methods and process phases of quantitative and qualitative research and project work. The students understand the basics of scientific thinking and recognize the significance of nursing research and project work in the development of nursing practice, education, and management. The students function in accordance with the ethical basis of nursing research and project work when working on their thesis and when engaged in working life-related research and development projects. The students use scientific publications related to their field when studying and doing research and development work. This is done in the students’ native language and a foreign language.

Course objectives: Nursing research

Student

- You can describe the basic of scientific thinking

- You can describe the research area in nursing research

- You can explain the objectives and principles of nursing research (quantitative and qualitative approach)

   and project work including the ethical basis of research and project work

- You recognise what is involved in critical appraisal of reading scientific publications

- You can explain the significance of nursing research and project work in nursing practice,

  education and management

- You can apply the knowledge of the course in your thesis (e.g the objectives and principles of nursing research)

Course objectives: statistics

- Short background of statistics

- Understanding of basic concepts of statistics

- Stages of statistical research

- Descriptive and inferential statistics

- Sampling methods

- Measure scales

- Measures of location

- Measures of dispersion

Ability to read quantitative researches from the point of view of statistics

Goals: to understand the significance of the statistics in the theory and practice of nursing work.

Assessment

1. You are active on the lessions and prepare yourself to lessions by reading your coursebook.

 Asking questions during lessions helps also other students in their learningprocess.

2. Groupwork and communication with other students strengthens your learning. You work in groups for example

 when you review scientific publications.

3. Independent or pairwork: Presentation of an idea paper for bachelor`s thesis.
