Objectives

Speech Communication and Academic Writing 3 ECTS

Competence Goals:

The student becomes familiar with the central theories and concepts of oral communication. S/he learns to perceive and interpret his/her perceptions in different communication situations. The student knows how to receive and give feedback. S/he recognizes him/herself as a communicator: a speaker and a writer. The student is able to express and analyze his/her own thoughts in writing. S/he knows how to assess and work on his/her own text. S/he is able to prepare a written presentation in a matter-of-fact style, correct both in language and in style and is familiar with the special requirements of writing scientific papers and theses.

Assessment criteria  
Pedagogical arrangements

Lectures, exercises, independent working, operational and drama methods, different workshop and group work exercises.Listening, conversation and performing skills. Reporting and reflective writing. Different type of texts as a tool for professional development.

Material

Students are provided with written materials and assignments. Moodle is used for submitting material to students and for receiving students assignments. Material is also provided via email and is accessed through the Internet.

Content

Course is devided in two:

  • Communication (listening, conversation and performing skills) - First half
  • Writing (reporting, reflective writing, different kind of professional texts) - Second half

Assessment

To pass the course, students must attend class on a regular basis and complete group work tasks and homework assignments.

In communication we do 3 oral presentations: group work, pair work and elevator speech.
