Objectives
 

The students are familiar with the salient functions of nursing of working-age people. They are familiar with the contents of the Occupational Health Care Act and can apply the Act in order to function according to the practice of occupational health care and nursing. They familiarize themselves with evidence-based nursing and the recommendations on good medical practice (especially medical-surgical illnesses) in nursing practice. The students can act in a multiprofessional way in the health promotion and rehabilitation of working-age people. The students participate in the implementation of adults’ physical examinations and in health promotion through individual and group work by using the latest methods of health promotion. They are aware of the most typical visceral, surgical, and work-related diseases of working-age people and the preventive health care measures against them. They know the contents of occupational protection, safety, and ergonomics.

Pedagogical arrangements

TC and Guided practice

The students, set their own personal goals for learning, and perform continuous self-assessment. During the guided clinical practice, the students make use of Individual Learning Diary for Guided Practice (those who commenced their studies before the year 2014)/ Guided Practice Learning Journal for Student Registered Nurses at Lapland University of Applied Sciences (those who commenced their studies in 2014 or later)Learning Journal Guided Practice . The Medication passport supports pharmacotherapy studies.

The course (Medication in Nursing) and/test in medical calculation must be passed with the approved grade before the beginning of the guided clinical practice in the 3rd, 5th and 7th term.


The working time of the students in guided practice is always 40 hours/week, of which 36 hours/week are to be done in the guided training placement, and four (4) hours/week are allocated for the written assignments related to the guided practice.

The working shifts of the whole guided practice period are planned on the schedule. The working hours which occur on holidays during the weekdays (on the so called the flexible holidays) are not to compensated. In case of several holidays during the guided practice, the guided practice period is prolonged. Sickness absences must always be notified as soon as possible both to the guided practice unit and to the clinical instructor or the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice. The replacement/compensation for the absences are to be negotiated with the clinical supervisor and the senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice

Surgical and Perioperative Nursing

Competence Goals

The student

  • is able to describe the care pathway of a surgical patient, and perioperative care as part of this pathway in a client-centered way and taking the family members into consideration
  • is able to be authentically present when supporting and guiding patients in various examinations, surgeries and other procedures
  • provides holistic nursing and guidance for surgical patients suffering from various conditions using a rehabilitative working method as a member of the nursing team

The student

  • can perceive the nursing pathway of an internal medicine patient
  • works as a member of a multi professional team with patients who suffer from the most common national diseases and internal medical problems.
  • can define the nursing care needs of a patient, and plan, implement and assess the nursing care of a client patient
  • guides, counsels and supports clients/patients and their families according to the principles of professional responsibility and ethical conduct
  • can give oral and written clinical reports in the context of his/her own patient
  • gets familiar in theory and practice with the principles of infection control and aseptic techniques in nursing
  • participates under supervision in the medical care and blood transfusion procedure of an internal medical patient

The senior lecturer in charge of the guided practice is responsible for the final grade mark and evaluation made up of the students self evaluation, his her clinical supervisors evaluation, and peer assessment dialogical discussion. The evaluation scale is Pass Fail.

The feedback from the clinical practice will be taken into consideration when grading the whole module. The mark Fail is based on the criteria of professional, cooperative and developmental qualities. Thus, one of the following criteria is sufficient for the mark Fail
