Students learn computing concepts and common business information technology hardware and operating systems. They learn how to perform tasks such as hardware installation, configuration, diagnosing, and preventive maintenance. Students learn different types of operating systems, their architecture, services, security and advanced configurations.

Pedagogical arrangements

Pedagogical practices in the course includestudent ownershipandactive participation(80% attendance required), activities of searching, sharing and ellaborating knowledge, conducting tasks and critical reflection on one's own activity. The teacher role in the course is delivering knowledge as well as organizing, assessing and guiding students.

The model ofinstructional designis implemented for systematically determined course contents and delivery methods that follows a logical sequence. Learners activities are predefined and a uniform sequence of instrcution is practiced. However, socio-cultural paradigm is focused by utilizing the model of collaborative learningin performing practical tasks and  assignments.


All learning materials and relevant literatures are available in the moodle learning environment for the course.

  1. Introduction to computer hardware and software: Essential Parts of Computer, Motherboard & Components, RAM
  2. Basic computing concepts: Data and Information, Data Structure, Input and Output Devices, Drivers, File Permission, Numbering Systems Used in Computers
  3. Introduction to Virtual Machine & Virtual Box
  4. Operating Systems (Windows 7) : Installation process, File Systems, User Management, System Maintenance, Backup, Basics of Windows CLI
  5. Operating Systems (Ubuntu 13.04): Installation process, File Systems, User Management, System Maintenance, Backup, Basics of Linux CLI
  6. Dual Boot (Ubuntu 13.04 & Windows 7)

The formative assessment model is applied in this course that is students are monitored during the learning process to make sure they are not struggling with the teaching methods and settings used.

  1. Assignments , Active Participations and a learning diary that briefly mentions  the subject taught in a particular day, the process of doing a particular task and the most difficult topic to understand (if any)  (70%)
  2. Exam (30%)

Students are required to pass both parts separately in order to pass this course.
